Effects of Light , Sucrose , and Growth Regulators on the Coloration of Cut Snapdragon Flower

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to study the effective methods of preventing discoloration of cut snapdragon during transportation or under low light intensity at consumption stage. The flower color and anthocyanin content of petal of cut snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus cv. Do Bong and Chun Bong) treated with various concentrations of sucrose solution (0, 2, 4, 10, 20%) were examined under the different light conditions (dark, low light intensity at the room center; 500¡1,000lux, high light intensity at the window side; 5,000¡10,000lux) respectively.
1. The anthocyanin content increased as the light intensity increased in order of dark, room center, and window side.
2. Effective sucrose concentrations of the anthocyanin content were 10% at dark, 4% at room center, and about 2% at window side, however, 20% sucrose treatment decreased the anthocyanin content regardless of any light condition.
3. It was considered to have the substitutive effect between light and sucrose on the anthocyanin synthesis because the proper sucrose concentration decreased as the light intensity increased.
4. The anthocyanin content was almost coincided with color value measured by a color computer. The flower color was better under the light condition which stimulates more anthocyanin synthesis.
